They need to know if you have any of these conditions:; kidney disease; liver disease; pneumonia; stomach problems (especially colitis); other chronic illness; an unusual or allergic reaction to azithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), foods, dyes, or preservatives; breast-feeding

AZITHROMYCIN (Zithromax? - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Zithromax

USES: Azithromycin also treats sexually transmitted vaginal or urinary tract infections caused by chlamydia. It will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

HOW TO USE: Take azithromycin TABLETS by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water. Azithromycin tablets can be taken with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, stomach upset, trouble sleeping, headache, or cold symptoms may occur. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Unlikely but report promptly: dizziness, mental/mood changes, fast heartbeat, fever. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: fainting, irregular heartbeat. Although drowsiness is very uncommon at usual doses under normal circumstances, be aware that drowsiness may occur and may effect the ability to perfom tasks requiring alertness (e.g., driving). If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.


DRUG INTERACTIONS: antacids; astemizole; digoxin; dihydroergotamine; ergotamine; magnesium salts; terfenadine; triazolam; warfarin Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines..

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include irregular or unusually slow or fast heartbeat, unusual nervousness or excitement, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures.

NOTES: Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 12 hours between doses.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.

?/td> Take all of the Zithromax that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.

What is Zithromax?

?/td> Zithromax is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
?/td> Zithromax may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.


What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Zithromax?

?/td> Before taking Zithromax, tell your doctor if you have liver disease. You may not be able to take Zithromax, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment.
?/td> Zithromax is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
?/td> It is not known whether Zithromax passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.


How should I take Zithromax?

?/td> Take Zithromax exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
?/td> Take each tablet or capsule with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
?/td> Take the Zithromax capsules and suspension on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
?/td> The Zithromax tablets can be taken with or without food.
?/td> Do not take Zithromax close to a dose of an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium such as Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids may decrease the effects of Zithromax.
?/td> To ensure that you get the correct dosage, measure the liquid form of Zithromax with a dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Shake the suspension well before measuring a dose.
?/td> To take the Zithromax (Zithromax)1 gram oral suspension single dose packet:
     ?/td> The entire contents of the packet should be mixed thoroughly with two ounces (approximately 60 mL) of water. Drink the entire contents immediately.
     ?/td> Add an additional two ounces of water, mix and drink to assure complete consumption of dosage.
     ?/td> The single dose packet should not be used to administer doses other than 1 gram of Zithromax. This packet is not for use by children.
?/td> Take all of the Zithromax that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.
?/td> It is important to take Zithromax regularly to get the most benefit.
?/td> Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused suspension after 10 days.


What happens if I miss a dose?

?/td> Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.


What happens if I overdose?

?/td> Seek emergency medical attention.
?/td> Symptoms of an Zithromax overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.


What should I avoid while taking Zithromax?

?/td> Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Zithromax may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable.


What are the possible side effects of Zithromax?

?/td> If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Zithromax and seek emergency medical attention:
     ?/td> an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or
     ?/td> liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue).
?/td> Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Zithromax and talk to your doctor if you experience
     ?/td> nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain;
     ?/td> unusual dizziness, fatigue, or headache;
     ?/td> vaginal yeast infection;
     ?/td> a rash; or
     ?/td> increased sensitivity to sunlight.
?/td> Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.


What other drugs will affect Zithromax?

?/td> Do not take Zithromax close to a dose of an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium such as Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids may decrease the effects of Zithromax.
?/td> Before taking Zithromax, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
     ?/td> carbamazepine (Tegretol);
     ?/td> phenytoin (Dilantin);
     ?/td> theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair, Theochron, others);
     ?/td> warfarin (Coumadin);
     ?/td> digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps);
     ?/td> pimozide (Orap);
     ?/td> triazolam (Halcion);
     ?/td> cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); or
     ?/td> another antibiotic.
?/td> You may not be able to take Zithromax, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
?/td> Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Zithromax. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
