Side effects that may go away during
treatment include drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or
nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your
doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your

DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take
this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with
your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this
medicine for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. AVOID
ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. This medicine will add
to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. DO NOT DRIVE,
OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS
until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine
alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your
ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
THIS MEDICINE CONTAINS ACETAMINOPHEN. Do not take additional
acetaminophen for pain or fever without checking with your doctor
or pharmacist. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about
which medicines contain acetaminophen. Acetaminophen may cause
liver damage. If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, do not take
this medicine without first discussing it with your doctor.
Alcohol use combined with acetaminophen may increase your risk for
liver damage. Pain medications work best if they are used as the
first signs of pain (or first signs of migraine) occur. If you
wait until the pain has significantly worsened, the pain medicine
may not work as well. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE,
either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or
pharmacist. FOR WOMEN TAKING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS: this medicine
may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. To
prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control while
you are taking this medicine. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT,
discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this
medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST
MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. |

Do not take Zebutal if you have taken a
monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan),
phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14
days. Dangerous side effects could result. Acetaminophen and
butalbital may increase the effects of other drugs that cause
drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines,
sedatives (used to treat insomnia), other pain relievers, anxiety
medicines, and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all
medicines that you are taking, and do not take any medicine unless
your doctor approves. Many other medicines contain acetaminophen,
especially over-the-counter pain, fever, cold, and allergy
medications. Too much acetaminophen can be very dangerous. |

Zebutal (Oral) is used for the Treatment
Acetaminophen (a-seet-a-MIN-oh-fen), Butalbital (byoo-TAL-bi-tal),
Caffeine (kaf-EEN) Treats tension headaches. This medicine contains a
barbiturate.
When To Not Use Zebutal (Oral)
You should not use this medicine if you have had allergic reactions to
acetaminophen (Tylenol? or butalbital, or if you have porphyria.
How Should You Use Zebutal (Oral)
Tablet, Capsule, Liquid
- Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how
often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your
doctor tells you to.It is not safe to use more than 4 grams (4,000
milligrams) of acetaminophen in one day (24 hours).
- Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon,
oral syringe, or medicine cup.
- If this medicine upsets your stomach, you may take it with food or
milk. If a dose is missed:
- If you are taking this medicine on a regular schedule and you miss
a dose or forget to take your medicine, take it as soon as you can.
If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the
medicine and skip the missed dose.
- Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Proper Zebutal (Oral) Storage
Store Zebutal (Oral) at room temperature away from sunlight and
moisture. Keep Zebutal (Oral) and all medications out of the reach
of children.
What To Avoid While Using Zebutal (Oral)
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine,
including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are using an MAO inhibitor (Eldepryl?
Marplan? Nardil? Parnate?, or any medicines that make you
sleepy (such as sleeping pills, cold and allergy medicine, other
narcotic pain relievers, or sedatives).
- Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.
Acetaminophen can damage your liver and drinking alcohol can
increase this risk. If you regularly drink 3 or more alcoholic
drinks every day, do not take acetaminophen without asking your
doctor.
- Many combination medicines contain acetaminophen, including
products with brand names such as Alka-Seltzer Plus? Comtrex?
Drixoral? Excedrin Migraine? Midol? Sinutab? Sudafed?
Theraflu? and Vanquish? Carefully check the labels of all other
medicines you are using to be sure they do not contain
acetaminophen.
Zebutal (Oral) Warnings
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding,
or if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or a stomach disorder.
- This medicine may be habit-forming. If you feel that the medicine
is not working as well, do not take more than your prescribed dose.
Call your doctor for instructions.
- This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving, using
machines, or doing anything else that could be dangerous if you are
not alert.
- Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are
using this medicine. Acetaminophen may affect the results of certain
medical tests.
Zebutal (Oral) Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in face or hands,
swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, tightness in chest,
trouble breathing
- Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
- Extreme weakness, shallow breathing, fast or slow heartbeat,
sweating, cold or clammy skin
- Lightheadedness or fainting
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in the upper stomach
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark-colored urine or pale stools If you
notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Dry mouth, constipation
- Feeling of being drunk, shaky, or excited
- Heartburn or trouble swallowing
- Muscle pain or weakness
